There are dive sites, and then there are blue holes and cenotes — geological marvels that plunge into the Earth's crust, offering a breathtaking, and sometimes challenging, glimpse into a world few ever see. These formations represent the frontier of underwater exploration, drawing divers through their remarkable beauty and ancient geological history.
Blue holes and cenotes originated during the Ice Age, when lower sea levels exposed limestone in regions like the Yucatán Peninsula and the Bahamas. Rainwater carved intricate cave networks through the stone. Following glacial melting and rising seas, these dry caverns flooded. Eventually, collapsing ceilings created the distinctive circular sinkholes known as blue holes (marine) or cenotes (terrestrial).
Descending divers encounter spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, formations remaining from when these spaces held air rather than water. The characteristic deep blue colour results from depth absorbing most light wavelengths.
The Great Blue Hole in Belize is a UNESCO World Heritage site and perhaps the most famous of them all. This marine sinkhole reaches approximately 125 metres deep and features colossal limestone formations and stalactites at depth, requiring Advanced Open Water certification to visit.
Exploring these sites connects a diver to a history stretching back millennia, and requires impeccable training and respect for these environments.
