Coelacanth: A Glimpse Into the Deep Past

The coelacanth (seel-a-canth) is one of the world's most famous “living fossils.” This remarkable fish was long believed extinct for approximately 65 million years before a shocking 1938 discovery proved otherwise, when fishing crews unexpectedly captured a live specimen. Currently, two living species exist, with fossil records tracing back 420 million years to the Devonian period.

Anatomy: A Legacy of Lobe-Finned Fish

These creatures represent the last surviving lobe-finned fish, distinguishing them from typical ray-finned varieties. Their most striking characteristic involves fleshy, paired fins containing internal bones that move synchronously, mimicking four-legged animal locomotion.

The head structure includes a gel-filled electrosensory organ in the snout termed the “rostral organ,” enabling electrical signal detection in darkness. A unique skull hinge permits the front cranial portion to elevate, enlarging the mouth opening – a trait absent in all other living vertebrates except certain Devonian fish.

Additional primitive characteristics include a hollow, fluid-filled notochord, incompletely developed vertebrae, enamel-coated teeth, and an oil-filled gas bladder.

Species and Distribution

For decades following 1938, Latimeria chalumnae represented the only identified living species, found primarily near the Comoros Islands in the western Indian Ocean.

A second population surfaced in 1997 near Sulawesi, Indonesia, roughly 6,000 miles eastward. Genetic testing confirmed this as a distinct species, Latimeria menadoensis, indicating millions of years of separation between populations.

These fish are now classified as endangered and receive global protection through CITES.

Evolution and Significance

Coelacanths belong to a primitive bony fish classification. Their nearest living relatives include lungfish from South Africa, Australia, and South America. Despite ongoing debate regarding exact evolutionary placement, they occupy a critical position as likely ancestors of all terrestrial vertebrates, including mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Recent cranial and jaw research has corrected previous anatomical misidentifications, fundamentally reshaping understanding of early jawed vertebrate evolution.

Ecology and Reproduction

These organisms inhabit deep, cold, temperate waters in the twilight zone, typically between 500–800 feet deep, preferring steep rocky volcanic slopes.

Behavioural patterns show daytime clustering in underwater caves with nighttime feeding ventures. They feed passively, drifting slowly along the seafloor hunting cephalopods and fish. Unlike most bony fish, they employ active biting rather than suction feeding.

Reproduction occurs through ovoviviparity – internally fertilised eggs develop within the mother, with embryos sustained by yolk sacs during an approximately one-year gestation, resulting in fully formed live offspring.
