The Fear of Getting Rusty

An old friend walks back through our doors after years away, and over a cup of coffee she admits what's really on her mind: "I'm worried. I used to be able to do everything without thinking. Now I feel like I've forgotten. What if I look stupid? What if I kit up wrong? What if everyone can tell I'm rusty? I used to feel like a hero… now I feel like a zero."

It's a feeling every diver knows, and honestly, it reaches far beyond diving. People hesitate to pick a skill back up, whether it's a professional skill, a leadership role, or a passion project they set aside, because they're afraid they'll look incompetent or that the ability has simply left them.

Here's the truth: that fear rarely matches reality. The moment you're back in the water, muscle memory and instinct tend to resurface far quicker than you expect. The skills haven't vanished, they've just been resting.

Three Lessons Diving Teaches Us About Getting Back In

Life moves in seasons. There are stretches when we're fully immersed in something, and stretches when other priorities take over. Rediscovering a dormant skill doesn't erase who you were before, it simply picks up where you left off.

So whatever skill or passion you've shelved because you're worried about being "rusty," consider this your sign to reclaim it. Book a refresher, get back in the water, and remember: you were never a zero. You were just between seasons.
