What I Have Learned on My Divemaster Course

Presentation

Professional presentation is crucial for a divemaster. Turning up looking the part means the first thought that pops into a customer's head is not a bad one, and that they can put their trust in you. Equipment maintenance is equally important, as damaged gear can make divers feel unsafe.

Briefings

Dive briefings are essential safety tools. There are countless detailed tips out there for giving a great dive briefing, but the core of it is this: briefings provide critical information about hazards and emergency procedures. A good briefing should be fun and interactive, as this builds camaraderie and makes everyone more relaxed. At the same time, a briefing shouldn't run on too long, as this causes people to lose focus on the vital information.

Logistics

Logistics is a key divemaster responsibility. Divemasters are typically the first point of contact for customer questions during a trip. Responsibilities include overseeing gear distribution and maintenance, organising dive schedules, and selecting appropriate sites based on weather conditions, tides, and diver experience levels.
