Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the PADI Open Water course take?

The course runs over 2 weeks: a Thursday evening session covering orientation, dry skills, and equipment fitting; pool sessions on the Saturday and Sunday; a lecture the following week covering dive planning (RDP) and safety; then open-water certification dives at Bass Lake or Miracle Waters over the closing Saturday and Sunday.

What is Discover Scuba Diving and how long does it take?

Discover Scuba is a supervised introductory dive session — no certification or prior experience needed. It's run in a confined pool environment in Gauteng under direct instructor supervision. Minimum age 10.

Where do training sessions and dives take place?

Pool and classroom sessions are held in Gauteng. Open-water certification dives take place locally at Bass Lake or Miracle Waters. Scubaversity also runs separate coastal dive trips to Sodwana Bay and Aliwal Shoal for certified divers.

What equipment is included, and what do I need to bring?

BCD, regulator, and cylinder are included. Everything else (mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, weights, etc.) can be bought or rented from Scubaversity.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes — the course includes the standard PADI watermanship/swim test as set out in the PADI Open Water Diver course requirements. You don't need to be a strong swimmer, just comfortable in the water.
